Personal interests

Ian heads up our Sports Business Group. He is recognised internationally as a leading sports lawyer and advisor and has also been credited with influencing sport related policy and law in Australia.

Ian was previously a founding member of the Australia and New Zealand Sports Law Association, Director of Sports Industry Australia (formerly the Confederation of Australian Sport) and Australian Sports Commissioner. He holds currently holds a number of significant roles in sport including Director of the Victorian Institute of Sport. Ian’s clients include leading national and state sporting organisations, government, corporate entities and sport industry aligned bodies.

Ian is recognised in the 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2010 editions of Best Lawyers (Australia) for his expertise in the area of Sports Law. 

Ian's areas of expertise include:
  • corporate governance and directors’ duties;
  • Corporations Act advice and competition law;
  • organisational structures;
  • selection and doping issues;
  • contractual issues (negotiating, drafting and dispute resolution);
  • sponsorship, advertising and e-commerce agreements;
  • disciplinary and other sports related disputes including procedural fairness;
  • sports insurance and risk management;
  • Court of Arbitration for Sport matters;
  • sports’ rights and intellectual property; and
  • event management and execution.
Ian was admitted to practice in 1989 and joined Lander & Rogers in 2002.
