Lander & Rogers is partnering with legal automation platform Josef to transform its seasonal clerkship program by challenging all clerks to design and build their own legal bots, giving them the chance to automate the delivery of legal advice and streamline the firm’s legal services.

Josef's platform enables lawyers to build legal tools that can automate parts of their day-to-day work, including lawyer-client conversations, drafting legal documents and providing legal guidance and advice. Lander & Rogers' clerks will use Josef’s platform during an intensive day-long Hackathon to deliver a solution back to a judging panel in a formal presentation.

This is the first time that the firm is incorporating the use of an automation platform into its seasonal clerks' education program, which aims to give future lawyers the foundation for a successful career in the rapidly-changing legal sector.

Michelle Grossmann, Head of Innovation & Transformation at Lander & Rogers, explains,

"Through this new approach to our clerkship program, we are equipping our young lawyers with the problem-solving skills needed to listen to what is important to our clients and find solutions tailored to them. It also presents our clerks with the opportunity to use the latest technology in the market and be supported directly by the founders of Josef. We hope that the automated solutions created by the clerks may be incorporated into the Lander & Rogers' automation strategy".

Josef is a Melbourne-based legal technology startup and one of the inaugural members of Lander & Rogers’ LawTech Hub. Started by a team of young engineers and lawyers in May 2018, Josef has since expanded around the world — from New York to outback Queensland — and across the legal industry, from the American Bar Association to local community legal centres in Australia.

Tom Dreyfus, CEO of Josef, says: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Lander & Rogers to run this industry-leading program. At Josef, our vision is to put our technology in the hands of every lawyer and legal professional so that they are empowered to automate parts of their day-to-day work. So, it’s incredibly important for seasonal clerks to be exposed to the technologies that will form such an integral part of their daily work. And it’s also crucial that Lander & Rogers can assess the technological capabilities of their new recruits".

Grossmann added, "The legal landscape is going through a significant shift and the firm's next generation of lawyers will need to be skilled in utilising technology to support their client service and legal advice. Lander & Rogers is dedicated to innovating the client experience and this commitment is driven from all areas in the firm — from our solicitors delivering our legal services, to our business specialists implementing leading technologies, and particularly our young lawyers who have a fresh perspective on new ways to deliver innovative services".

Earlier this year, Lander & Rogers pioneered Australia's first LawTech Hub of its kind. The LawTech Hub by Lander & Rogers powered by YBF Ventures, provides an immersion opportunity for startups and scaleups within its vibrant coworking community to solve real legal and business challenges using new technologies. Josef was one of the first scaleups to join the Hub, which has provided the opportunity for Josef to partner with Lander & Rogers to innovative its education program.
