State of the Nation: Australian Politics Seminar
According to the Hon. Andrew Thomson, there is heightened interest among Japanese business people in Australia regarding the country's sudden change of Prime Minister.
Andrew, who is an advisor with Lander & Rogers' Japan Client Group, joined the Hon. Larry Anthony and Mr Geoff Walsh AO, in a presentation last night to senior Japanese business executives based in Australia about Australia's current political situation, policy directions and the flow-on implications for their businesses.
The presenters, all of whom have rich business experience post-politics, including experience in Asia, discussed and took questions about key policy areas, such as industrial relations reform, tax system changes, Australia-Japan relations and defence procurement.
Speaking about defence procurement, the Hon. Andrew Thomson, who lives and works in Japan, commented that, "The potential submarine deal between Australia and Japan is probably the most significant transaction between our two countries in the last 50 years. Whether or not this deal goes ahead, the very fact it is being proposed is significant in itself. This clearly shows a new depth to the economic relationship between Australia and Japan."
Head of Lander & Rogers' International Practice, Derek Humphery-Smith said, "These types of events provide unique insights for ex-pat executives into key aspects of Australian business life. A change of prime minister could be unsettling, but when the right context is provided, it makes the change far less controversial.
"Our collaboration with the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) is an important platform for our Japan Client Group and we are particularly grateful for their support in organising last night's event."
