Millie Jones

Senior Associate

Millie is a Brisbane-based lawyer with a developing practice that includes all aspects of employment law, discrimination, industrial relations and safety.

Having acted for employers within the private and public sectors, Millie has experience across various industries but with a particular focus on sport, leisure, major events and not-for-profits.

Experience

Prior to joining Lander & Rogers, Millie gained experience in both boutique and international law firms. She has also served as a Judge's Associate in the District Court of Queensland.

Millie's areas of expertise include:

discrimination and human rights defending claims in the Fair Work Commission, Queensland Industrial Relations Commission, Queensland Human Rights Commission and federal courts enterprise bargaining strategy and advice advising on payroll compliance and underpayments general advice including in relation to employment and consultancy agreements, performance management, disciplinary matters, termination and redundancy supporting complex workplace investigations development of workplace policies and training employment due diligence and transaction support.

Alongside her workplace relations practice, Millie regularly advises sporting organisations on matters including corporate governance, commercial contracting, integrity and regulatory compliance.

Millie is the Queensland representative for the Young Members Subcommittee of the Australian and New Sports Law Association, and volunteers her time as a panel member for the AFLQ Disciplinary Tribunal. She has published articles in both the Australian and New Zealand Sports Law Journal and the Sports Law and Governance Journal.

Career highlights

Millie's career highlights include:

  • reviewing various athlete agreements for compliance with the ATO class ruling for “National sporting organisations – financial support provided to elite athletes” to minimise deemed employment risk
  • acting for a tertiary education provider defending sensitive allegations of discrimination in a state industrial relations commission
  • assisting a sporting league with the development of its pregnancy and parental leave policy for athletes, considering the complex overlay of discrimination, safety, *Fair Work Act 2009 *(Cth) and collective bargaining agreement obligations
  • advising a national retailer on the identification and remediation of widespread payroll non-compliance, including the approach for engaging with the regulator, unions and employees
  • supporting a complex workplace investigation for a private sector client which considered numerous allegations of sexual harassment and providing related employment advice
  • achieving a commercial settlement outcome for a state sporting organisation defending an unfair dismissal claim.
